Alemania no es sólo la del fútbol. En esta semana se han producido dos sucesos que tienen que ver sí, sin exagerar, con el futuro de la humanidad. El primero, la irracionalidad del sistema económico, que lleva a ironías que transgreden cualquier fantasía. El segundo tiene que ver con el futuro del ser humano, que es la maternidad, justamente el origen de todo, y a la cual no se la puede ya pasar por alto como se hizo hasta ahora.

(Business 2.0) - Now that Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates has started his two-year goodbye from a day-to-day role at the company, it's time for CEO Steve Ballmer to set a resignation date, too.

Since Gates stepped down as CEO in 2000 in favor of Ballmer, the company has floundered technically and strategically. As the company's chairman, chief software architect and supposed visionary, Gates deserves blame for missing the wave of Web-based software that has propelled Google and Yahoo.

But Ballmer has made gaffes of his own in his longtime role as head of the company's business side. They include an undistinguished push into business applications to compete with Oracle, financial maneuvers that have failed to stir the stock - which has slumped 16 percent so far this year - and continuing antitrust problems in the United States and Europe.

El testigo, y víctima, vio cómo a su mujer la hacían entrar por la fuerza a una oficina: “La tiraron sobre un escritorio y como ella no quería, una mujer policía le pegaba”. Cardozo identificó a la cabo primera Marta Jorgelina Oviedo, acusada por el delito de “torturas seguida de muerte”, junto con otros tres uniformados, el oficial principal David Gutiérrez, el suboficial principal Carlos Maidana y el agente Oscar Farías. En el juicio oral, que comenzó ayer, también está imputado el oficial subinspector Diego Herrera por “omisión de denuncia”. Andrea Viera fue internada en estado de coma la noche del 10 de mayo y doce días después murió. Su esposo sobrevivió para contar que eran vendedores ambulantes y que fueron detenidos “por error”.

Se trata de un caso testigo para las organizaciones de mujeres. En un juicio oral que arrancó ayer en Córdoba, dos mujeres están acusadas de proxenetismo pese a que ellas mismas fueron vendidas, violadas y reducidas a servidumbre. Las historias y el testimonio exclusivo de Vanesa y Betiana.

La voz de Betiana Zapata apenas se escucha, es como si las palabras se derramaran de su boca y se perdieran en ese punto fijo entre las zapatillas prestadas que ahora usa donde se protegen sus ojos. “Ciento y pico”, dice y tose cuando el presidente del Tribunal de la Cámara Correccional de Bell Ville insiste en que ponga un monto a lo que ganaba por mes en el cabaret Puente de Fuego, a setenta kilómetros de esa silla donde se hamaca y se seca las manos sudadas. Apenas diez minutos antes, a su turno, Jorge Luis González, un policía federal retirado del área de inteligencia, puso también un monto para sus ganancias mensuales por regentear el local donde Betiana “hacía pases”: 4 mil pesos. Es lógico, la chica de 21 recién cumplidos no era la única que “trabajaba” en ese paraje aislado junto al río Carcarañá. Vanesa Payero, con el tono algo más firme que su compañera, dijo que cobraba por “ejercer la prostitución” cerca de trescientos. Pero los tres –junto a Valeria Carina Calderón, concubina de González– están acusados por el mismo delito: promoción de la prostitución calificada, privación ilegítima de la libertad y reducción a la servidumbre contra otras tres chicas, una menor de 18. Y es que tanto Vanesa como Betiana ya habían aprendido el precio de resistirse a cumplir las órdenes del patrón cuando una de las víctimas en este juicio logró saltar el cerco de su cautiverio y pedir ayuda. Ese tiempo de violencia sostenida es lo que media entre ser víctima y ser acusadas de victimarias.

Mozilla, maker of the open-source Firefox Web browser and Thunderbird e-mail client, says a reliance on proprietary technologies is still an obstacle for IT directors looking to deploy open source in the enterprise.
Mozilla Corporation CEO Mitchell Baker readily admitted to Silicon.com that the enterprise is "not our sweet spot" but said the organization offers an enterprise customization kit created by an IBM developer and said it's interested in working with partners to address the needs of corporate IT.

"The gold is the company that steps up and says, 'I'm willing to do something,'" Baker said.

While many IT directors do allow the open-source browser to be used on company time, those who don't are often held back by the proprietary technologies employed on their intranets.

"Enterprises have intranets that only work with (Microsoft's) IE," Baker said. "We can't fix their intranet."

There's speculation on Wall Street that Microsoft is going to dump CEO Steve Ballmer and hold him responsible for the company's ills like not being able to get its stock price to move off the dime. There's no speculation about who would succeed him yet, just a shiver of apprehension when Bill Gates' name comes up.

This speculation comes at a time when Microsoft is in on of its periodic "student body left" changes of direction, where it moves its metaphorical crosshairs to whomever is perceived as the latest Big Threat to its business. Microsoft, under the leadership of Ballmer and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, first pulled this trick against Apple, GEM, and the graphical user interface in the 80s, moved onto a suite of application software developers, vanquished Netscape (something Ballmer recently bragged about at a Churchill Club meeting in San Jose), and now has decided that Google represents the latest threat to its business.

May 19 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. is raising spending on employees' stock awards about 15 percent and adding perks to help prevent an exodus of workers to rivals such as Google Inc.

The company's 63,500 workers will get on-site laundry and dry cleaning, better food, discounts on pet and auto care and the return of a free towel service that Microsoft ended in 2004. The world's largest software maker also will increase some employees' pay, spokesman Corey duBrowa said yesterday.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer is responding to complaints from staff and rising competition for workers from Google as well as new Internet companies. Ballmer last year sent his new human resources chief, 16-year Microsoft veteran Lisa Brummel, on a so-called listening tour to hear employee gripes about compensation and performance reviews.

``Compared with how it was five or 10 years ago, employee satisfaction scores are going down'' at Microsoft, said Matt Rosoff, an analyst at Kirkland, Washington-based Directions on Microsoft. ``It's very important for Microsoft to keep people happy and working so they can grow revenue.''

Shares of Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft are down 13 percent this year, in part driven by the company's announcement last month that it will spend about $2 billion more to help catch up to Google. The shares fell 12 cents to $22.71 at 9:51 a.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading.

The changes, part of a program called myMicrosoft, were unveiled yesterday by Brummel and Ballmer at an employee town hall meeting, according to a companywide e-mail sent by Brummel and obtained by Bloomberg News.

(CNN) -- Portland, Oregon is the unlikely capital of a global software revolution. The revolution is called Open Source. And its leader? Linus Torvalds, the reclusive founder of Linux.

Linux is the free software code developed by a global community of programmers. It's also the world's fastest growing operating system and number two behind Microsoft.

Torvalds works full time overseeing the development of Linux which he created back in 1991 while at university in Helsinki.

Usually media shy, the 36-year-old Finn invited Kristie Lu Stout and the Global Office team into his home for an insight into life at the helm of the operating system that is giving Microsoft some serious headaches.

Kristie Lu Stout: What role do you play in the development of Linux today?

Linus Torvalds: Well today what I do mostly is actually communication. I started out as the main developer but these days what I do is act as the central point for other people who do a lot of development and I gather it all together and basically communicate with people what needs to be done and so on.

KLS: What's your ballpark figure in terms of how many Linux developers there are out there?

LT: I actually only work with a few handfuls so I tend to directly interact with maybe 10 - 20 people and they in turn interact with other people. So depending on how you count, if you count just the core people, 20 -50 people. If you count everybody who's involved; five thousand people -- and you can really put the number anywhere in between... Almost, pretty much all, real work is done over e-mail so it doesn't matter where people are.

KLS: So you have the core people, you have the developers and you have the testers. What do you think motivates everyone, drives everyone to create the best work possible to create a good product?

LT: A lot of the core people just feel excited about the technology. And that's why a lot of people just start; that's where I started from, it was just the excitement of doing something yourself. It's kind of like a hobby. You can tinker with cars, you can tinker with computers. There are a lot of technical issues that are just very exciting if you're that kind of person...At least from the developers' standpoint, nobody does it because they hate Microsoft. None of the people I work with do it for that reason. They do it because they love doing what they do.
